BERLIN (AP) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel is meeting with Eurogroup Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker amid mounting concerns that Europe's debt crisis is hurting banks and causing an economic slowdown.
Following the closed-door meeting Friday, Merkel is set to meet with Dutch Premier Mark Rutte, whose parliament on Thursday became the latest to approve an expanded eurozone bailout fund.
Merkel said Thursday after meetings with the heads of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank that governments could ask the eurozone bailout fund for money to help re-capitalize banks, if governments can prove that failing to do so would destabilize the common currency.
Merkel earlier this week spoke out in favor of a coordinated recapitalization of Europe's banking sector, which is under pressure from the debt crisis.
